About the home

A machiya's rebirth.

The first time we walked into this house, we nearly turned around. It had been neglected for years. The walls were covered in vinyl, the property had almost no natural light, and the floorboards gave under our feet. But we had a feeling about what was underneath.

As we peeled back the vinyl, we found earthen walls that had been quietly aging in the background for a century. Under the worn floorboards was a solid wooden structure, still standing on its original foundations.

This house is going to get a second life.

Architecture

Beauty in shadows

The original house let in so little light that it inspired us to lean into a darker palette, bringing in just enough light to accentuate the shadows.

Interior

Designed around the bathtub

A dramatically oversized deep soaking tub sits at the heart of the home, made for soaking for too long and staying in.

Everything else was kept to a minimum, with a few antiques and handcrafted pieces we found scouring the markets of Kyoto over the years.
