A letter from us to you

A new phase, continued stories

To those who have stayed with us, visited us, or followed our journey from afar.

Maana began with the restoration of a single machiya, Maana Kyoto. As we slowly expanded to not just a collection of spaces, but a gathering of people, stories and rituals, we found ourselves endlessly inspired by the masters who welcomed us into their worlds, and by our guests who gave new life to our spaces.

Each phase deepened our relationship with time. Kyoto truly has a way of returning you to what matters. The beautiful moments in between.

We began asking what it would mean to build a new home from the ground up, while carrying all the stories with us, from the past to the present.

We look forward to sharing our findings with you in this new project, Maana Annex.

With gratitude,Irene and Hana

Tsuchikabe - 土壁

A second life.

The earthen walls, known as tsuchi-kabe, once lived inside our workshop space, Maana Atelier, and have now found a second life in the Annex. Made simply from fermented rice straw, seaweed, and local earth, these walls were carefully taken down, sifted by hand to remove impurities, and prepared again to be rebuilt.

By reusing them, we allow the earth to tell its story twice, bringing the memories with it. It is a slow and rather rare process today, one that asks for patience and care.

The Story of Maana x Norm Architects x KAD

Some collaborations begin with a brief. Ours began with a friendship.

For years, we have shared a dialogue with our friends in Copenhagen, connected by a mutual love for Japanese craftsmanship and quiet living . Through countless conversations, we often found ourselves wondering why certain handcrafted materials age into beauty while others simply fade.

Together with Norm Architects and their Japanese partner Keiji Ashizawa (KAD), we wanted to create a home together that holds everything we have wondered and come to love over the last eight years, while looking toward the future of Maana.

Our approaches are different, yet complementary. We embrace texture, warmth, and imperfection. While our work is shaped by different cultures and experiences, we are connected by a common desire to create spaces that feel calm, meaningful, and timeless. This is what makes the collaboration feel so special.
