A letter from us to you

A new phase, continued stories

To those who have stayed with us, visited us, or followed our journey from afar.

Maana began with the restoration of a single machiya, Maana Kyoto. As we slowly expanded to not just a collection of spaces, but a gathering of people, stories and rituals, we found ourselves endlessly inspired by the masters who welcomed us into their worlds, and by our guests who gave new life to our spaces.

Each phase deepened our relationship with time. Kyoto truly has a way of returning you to what matters. The beautiful moments in between.

We began asking what it would mean to build a new home from the ground up, while carrying all the stories with us, from the past to the present.

We look forward to sharing our findings with you in this new project, Maana Annex.

With gratitude,Irene and Hana

Tsuchikabe - 土壁

A second life.

The earthen walls, known as tsuchikabe, once lived inside our workshop space, Maana Atelier, and have now found a second life in the Annex.

In many ways, our relationship with Tsuchikabe shaped what Maana is today. What began as a fascination, led to the creation of Maana Atelier, our earthen wall workshops and retreats, and ultimately our relationship with our master plasterer, Hiraishi-san of TOURU Inc., whose mission is to pass on the knowledge and possibilities of this material to future generations. Over time, tsuchikabe became an integral part of the Maana story.

Made simply from fermented rice straw, seaweed, and local earth, the walls from our Atelier were carefully taken down, sifted by hand to remove impurities by our own team, and prepared to be rebuilt once again. As we sifted the earth by hand, fragments of pottery, shells, and other traces began to emerge. Each discovery offered a glimpse into the material’s past, reminding us that the earth carries memories long before it becomes part of a building.

Recycling tsuchikabe is not the easiest path, but it reflects a belief that materials still have value long after their first use. We are proud that these walls have found a second life in the Annex, continuing a story that once began at Maana Atelier.

The Story of Maana x Norm Architects x KAD

Some collaborations begin with a brief. Ours began with a friendship.

For years, we have shared a dialogue with our friends in Copenhagen, connected by a mutual love for Japanese craftsmanship and quiet living . Through countless conversations, we often found ourselves wondering why certain handcrafted materials age into beauty while others simply fade.

Together with Norm Architects and their Japanese partner Keiji Ashizawa (KAD), we wanted to create a home together that holds everything we have wondered and come to love over the last eight years, while looking toward the future of Maana.

Our approaches are different, yet complementary. We embrace texture, warmth, and imperfection. While our work is shaped by different cultures and experiences, we are connected by a common desire to create spaces that feel calm, meaningful, and timeless. This is what makes the collaboration feel so special.
